What is a Library and Information Technician?

A Library and Information Technician (LIT) is a graduate of a two-year Library and Information Technician diploma programme recognized by the Canadian Library Association. A LIT has acquired a specialized knowledge of library information systems and methods in developing, organizing and maintaining a collection of material. LITs are able to work with minimum supervision and may be expected to supervise other staff (i.e., clerical, pages, and student). A Library and Information Technician can:

  • establish, organize and maintain readily accessible information collections including: books, periodicals, newspapers, government documents, catalogues, films, microforms, tapes, records and other material using the latest information technologies
  • provide both automated and manual information retrieval
  • perform all acquisition and catalogue procedures
  • provide special services required for effective operation of a library/information center
