In a traditional library, public service may include some of the following:
• reference - provide reference and directional information
• research - literature and bibliographic searches
• knowledge and use of e-mail, the Internet, Intranet - instruct clients & colleagues on use of Internet and electronic resources
• knowledge and use of government documents
• circulation, interlibrary loans and document delivery
• publicity and promotion of the library
• current awareness profiles
• special services - programming
• collection development
• budget formulation and preparation
• supervisory duties

Technical services may include some or all of the following:
• acquisitions - ordering and receiving of materials (print and nonprint); selection and/or
recommendation of new material ; maintenance of accounting records
• cataloguing - original and/or derived
• classification
• maintenance of library catalogue (print or online)
• data input / data management
• recommending, implementing / recording library procedures
• serials management
• weeding of the collection
• budget formulation and preparation
• supervisory duties
