Conference 2012

Blazing New Trails/ Découvrir de Nouvelles Voies

Planning for the 2012 OALT/ABO Conference is underway! The conference is being held on May 3, 4 & 5, 2012 at Seneca College's King Campus. The 700 acre campus is situated within the Oak Ridges Moraine and is comprised of rolling fields, hiking trails through forest and a beautiful lake. The theme for this year's conference is "Blazing New Trails/Découvrir de Nouvelles Voies". We have some great ideas for workshops but would like to hear from you, our members.

Is there a topic that you would really like to see at a workshop? Would you be interested in giving a presentation? Join us in blazing new trails!

Book Club

We would like to welcome all OALT/ABO members to the brand spanking new OALT/ABO BOOK CLUB!

Every month or so we will introduce a new book. Every couple of weeks we’ll discuss topics from the book in either Facebook or Twitter. Feel free to talk about anything else as well, whether new books you’re reading or how awesome OALT/ABO is!

The “we” that we keep referring to is Melissa Dawn Gifkins and Stefanie-Alexis Read (@melissadawng and @saread on twitter). We are graduates from the Library and Information Technician Program at Seneca College.

Please feel free to drop by the OALT/ABO Facebook page and introduce yourself. A goal of this bookclub is to build a network with other Library Technicians in Ontario using varying forms of social media.

We are looking forward to hearing from you!

Dates: February 2 - 5, 2011
Location: Metro Toronto Convention Centre

We're exhibiting at OLA Super Conference Thanks for visiting the OALT/ABO booth #T1–T2 at OLA Super Conference. We hope you enjoyed seeing an updated list of member job titles and workplaces (which thanks to your requests will be posted on our site shortly), talking to a member and more.

I would like to take this opportunity to draw your attention to the four sessions that were provided by our association. Presentations are posted above.

Friday, February 4th at 9:05 am – Session 1014
Numeracy + Information Literacy = Success
Speaker: Melissa Poremba, Grand Erie District School Board

We expertly use our libraries to support literacy skills development. Now let's use our same assets to support numeracy education! The library is the perfect place to curb "math anxiety" as we can show students that math is useful, interesting, relevant and even fun. Learn how to utilize your library's collections and services to integrate numeracy skills development in information literacy programming.

Friday, February 4th at 2:10 pm – Session 1213
I’ve Got the Education, What Do I Do Now?
Speaker: Kate Morrison, Library Technician, Hamilton Public Library

Many jobs within the library and information field are traditional, but others are not! Think outside the box to find new possibilities to pursue with traditional training programs.

Friday, February 4th at 3:45 pm – Session 1313
Simple & Free Technologies for Professional Development
Speaker: Marian Doucette, Web Architect, County of Huron

Web 2.0 tools are increasing daily. Discover new applications and different ways to use familiar ones. Find free tools and learn ways to evaluate and implement them to create or enhance your personal professional connections.

Saturday, February 5th at 9:15 am – Session 1710
What Makes a Special Library “Special”?
Speaker: Maggie Weaver, Editor, Canadian Association of Importers & Exporters

Working in a special library offers challenges and rewards that are quite different from other libraries. Hear from a "CASLIS Special Librarian of the Year", about the ups and down of this library field, and the role of library technicians within it.

For these and other sessions, please see the OLA Superconference website.

2011 - OALT/ABO’s 38th Annual Conference Highlights

Dates: May 4 - 7, 2011
Location: Algonquin College, Ottawa

Online registration is now closed and the full conference package can be accessed here!

OALT/ABO’s 38th Annual Conference will take place at Algonquin College, Ottawa – May 4 - 7, 2011
Save the date – you won’t want to miss this great lineup of speakers and events!

How to get to the OALT/ABO Conference in Algonquin?

Driving
If you are staying in Residence, parking is free. When you check in, you’ll be given a parking pass to display on your dash, and directed to the appropriate parking lot.

If you’re not staying in Residence, the visitor parking Lot 7 is conveniently behind P building, where our sessions will be – parking there is $14 per day. Or you can go further away to Lot 12, where parking is only $7 per day.

If you’re coming just for social events or the Annual Business Meeting, you’ll be glad to know that parking is free after 5pm and at weekends.

Train

If you’re planning to take Via Rail to the conference, buy a ticket to Fallowfield, rather than Ottawa.

From the Via Rail station at Fallowfield it’s a $17 taxi ride to the Algonquin Residence. Or you can step across to the OC Transpo stop 2A, just outside the Fallowfield station, and take the 95 Orléans bus to Baseline station ($3.25) – walk from Baseline station through Algonquin College to the Residence.

Car- and taxi-pooling

There are sure to be several people taking a cab from the airport or the train stations at Ottawa and Fallowfield, or who will be driving and have extra space. Send an email to oaltabodiscussion@yahoogroups.com to find someone to share the driving or the cab fare.

  • Opening Reception: We will again be greeting conference participants and Algonquin College LT Alumni at the opening reception, on Wednesday, May 4. We will also have a special guest: Councillor Jan Harder, Ottawa Councillor for Ward 3 Barrhaven, Chairman of Ottawa Public Library Board, and President of the Canadian Library Trustees Association
  • Speakers: We have a great line-up of speakers from all types of libraries, including some “by popular demand”! The sessions will mostly be presented in English, but many speakers are bilingual and will answer questions also in French. The full program will be available at the end of January – included will be a special appearance by our philosopher practitioner, Stan Skrzeszewski, at lunchtime on Thursday, May 5.
  • Thursday evening: You will have 2 options – stay at home or go out. But what options those are! Stay at “home” in the residence and spend a Psychic Evening – ticket $40, includes supper. Or go “out” and take a tour Behind the Scenes at the Bytown Museum – ticket $12, supper on your own.
  • Tours: We are spoiled for tours in Ottawa! The tour on Friday morning, May 6, will be to the Library and Archives Canada PLUS the Library of Parliament – needless to say, the tour will start early! The afternoon tour will take us to the libraries of Natural Resources Canada. Note that spaces will be limited on all the tours.
  • OALT/ABO Awards Banquet: Not only will we applaud our award winners, we’ll be entertained by Kasturi Mishra, Kathak dancer, and students from Gharana Arts, in an introduction to the traditional story-telling dance of northern India – tickets $50.
  • Annual Business Meeting: The conference wraps up with the OALT/ABO Annual Business Meeting. Let us know if you’re planning to attend, so that we can provide lunch for you (no charge).
  • Accommodation: We will be in the Algonquin College Residence, see http://www.algonquincollege.com/residence/rooms.html for the layout of the shared suites: just $45/night if you share a suite, or $80/night for a single, plus HST – parking is included!

And the bottom line? The conference fees will be $230 members, $290 non-members, and $83 for students. And of course, there are also 2-day and 1-day registration options.

Contact info@oaltabo.on.ca if you have any questions.
